Shelves. A place that can easily become a dumping ground for miscellaneous papers or where your clutter begins to pile up. While you may not think people notice, having a styled shelf can instantly transform your home. But, how do you make your shelves look effortlessly pulled together?

First, shop your home! You probably already have everything in your space to use. Gather a mix of books, small scale art, framed pictures, vessels, vintage, sculptural or decorative objects. Be sure to incorporate a nice mix of your materials.

Place your larger objects first towards the bottom for anchoring. Then start to build in your books. Try to arrange these in different directions; some horizontal, some vertical. Divide them up when placing these to make space for your decorative elements.

Next, build in medium vases, vessels, and art. Follow this with your smaller pieces throughout. Try to cluster smaller objects, or leave organic elements alone to stand-out from the crowd.

Continue to move your items around. Do this for a while, while you edit. Maybe that cluster you just created would look better with three pieces instead of four? Try taking a step back to see your work which will help to finalize the arrangement.

Once you throw the idea away of “perfection” you will see how perfect it looks.
